it was a spectacular sunday afternoon as i, allison, tin, and her sister ate donna trooped to the mall of asia arena to watch saltimbanco (an abundance of joyful and colorful acrobatics in a metropolis), our second cirque du soleil experience in two years.
when this same group watched varekai last year, i spent the first half of it miffed because allison and i were late and unfortunately, it was entirely our fault. (unfortunately, because isn't it always nice to pin the blame on everything else but yourself?)thinking how expensive the tickets were only added fuel to the fire. (and with non-confrontational me, it's the quiet fire inside that makes me an ice queen outside that really ought to warn friends to tread softly.) although by the latter half i was no proof against varekai's spell, it's still a shame i wasn't able to enjoy it more.
so this year we tried harder. (i even wore a glittering blue top for nothing is more magical than sequins, no?) saltimbanco was a few hours and a universe away in a world of both color and shadow, unexpected audience interaction, and mystical live music. we didn't understand a word said except for a charming prelude done in tagalog, but we were only too mesmerized to let our imagination do the talking. it's the kind of show that makes kids of everyone, a combination of bated breath and hands raw from clapping. (it didn't hurt that our seats were upgraded at the last minute, too!)
and while a lot of it was similarly showcased in varekai in varying degrees, i thoroughly enjoyed myself because of the chance to make new memories to replace less than happy ones. (diba? isn't life beautiful like that?) (i know, there's a moral here somewhere.) these, i will unwrap may times like presents to tide me over until the circus comes again.: )
