39. splendor

from this:

to this:

finally, the coron trip pushed through. yellow-striped cardigan for lemonade! (the connection actually hit me just now, so i might as well squeeze it (like lemons, get it?) for all its worth. haha.)

as expected, coron did not disappoint. it is a mariner's escape, long stretches of blue and sea spray and blazing sun. a whole day of snorkeling sans sunblock was enough to toast us to a warm redness and birth freckles, and by our last destination - the craggy peaks of the twin lagoons ala mordor - i was enamored of the sea as much as i was terrified of it, of how its silent immensity dragged down my arms exhausted from pushing against its body for hours, and how its ancient impassivity would have me sink into its depths unnoticed.

all this adventure though paled next to the night sky. on the boat ride back to dive link the evening of the second day, i was treated to one of the most awe-inspiring sights of my life. it was the stars raw as i had never seen them before, and it was as if i was a blind man who was seeing how things really were for the first time. when before i could only guess at their presence, that night they held nothing back.

the best trips are those that have the unexpected liberally sprinkled in them, that somehow fit the jagged edges to the perfect boundaries of plans and schedules. the sea i was expecting from coron but curiously not the stars, and i am fuller and more grateful for being surprised.: )

next up: the northern lights.: )
