15. personal soundtrack

on my way to work today, i was inside a jeepney when it dawned on me that an air supply song was being played. i smiled, being an 80s baby and having been brainwashed early on in life on the sheer genius of two men belting out melodies about love and loss and life, i was ecstatic. the next song played, and it was still air supply. perfect! i thought. they're playing the whole album! oh happy day!

with my head filled with the melancholy notes, barely stopping myself from mouthing out the words, i made a sweeping gaze of the inside of the jeep. heads were fixed towards the front of the jeepney, in that default pose commuters assume when they look out the window en route to their destinations, all seemingly lost in thought. i did the sweep again, this time slower, more contemplative, more becoming aware of the ridiculousness of the moment. outside the sun was bearing down on us with a vengeance in a way it had not done in days, traffic was busy with the too familiar honks, and inside, all of us were still. and listening. with air supply in the background.

i, i was the lonely one... wondering what went wrong...
now and forever, remember the words from my heart... will always... be true...

and the clincher:

two less lonely people in the world... and we're gonna be fine...!

cheee. never let it be said that my four-hour daily commute to work does not have its charms. they come, in bursts and irreplaceable doses, and save me from being cynical. : )
