34. bubbles

it was my first time to try real champagne that night - and it was good variety, too. it was the salon de ning's rose champagne, bottled exclusively for this newest of dining nooks in the manila peninsula. the color of honey, it went down smooth and sparkling as a gurgling brook in the countryside.

perhaps it was too smooth, for when my officemate denise and i were walking from salon de ning to the restaurant spices, all part of the culinary journey the hotel was sponsoring for the international journalists we had invited for FAME,  i was already quite golden in all the easy laughter and company.

then came the voice of a man decked in hotel livery, who greeted us deferentially, "good evening" ---

--- to which i sweetly replied, champagne flute in hand, "thank you!!!"

erm. something not quite right with that response. when it dawned on me and i felt that too-familiar rush and resignation of yet another of my katangahans,  i hurriedly related it to denise and we ended up in gales of laughter all the remaining way to spices. : )

in retrospect, i blame it on the very polite hotel staff who had peppered us with sophisticated courtesies throughout the evening, prompting me to thank them (in the most pilit-mature, nonchalant manner i could muster) at every available turn. (haha.) maybe it also had something to do with my "small girl in a big, crazy world" complex that has foolishly refused all coolness injections since birth, and which constantly fuels the breathless naivete that makes me thankful for every little thing.

or really, i just blame it all on the bubbles, the easy way out.:p
